Germany announced late last week that they are now open for travel to and from South Africa, which is a victory for many but not so fast, there are a few restrictions in place. Let’s unpack, shall we? As it’s crucial that we keep you up to date with the latest travel news.

Restrictions

So while German tourists may now visit South Africa freely, only certain South Africans may visit the European country and we’ve listed the conditions below:

Germany now allows South Africans to travel to Germany and vice versa if you are:

A doctor
An air ambulance
A diplomat
An international nuclear inspector
A family member of someone in the country
A skilled worker who is needed in the country
A student in Germany
A researcher for Germany
A scientist who is needed in Germany
A skilled business traveller
A person who is in professional training needed in Germany

There are many more details regarding the above, but these are the main conditions. Travel for leisure is not yet open, but if you happen to fall into one of the above categories, you may just be in luck!

Germany’s promise

The country said that the tight restrictions regarding the travel ban are only there until the climate of the Omicron COVID-19 variant changes. It is also promised that they are dedicated to fighting the pandemic alongside South Africa and are willing to work with us on the gradual lifting of the travel restrictions as time progresses.

Hopefully, travelling for leisure will become easier sooner than later. For now, we can celebrate that we are one step closer to being able to travel internationally.
