Hiking trails of South Africa

According to a list compiled by travel adventure company Explore!, two South African hiking trails are considered some of the best in the world that anyone can do.

The company said that they believed that any place worth going is a place worth hiking through, so they assembled a list of 35 of the best hikes in the world that almost anyone can do. These hiking trails range from short jaunts one could do in less than an hour to longer, multi-day itineraries.

The two SA hiking trails that featured were both in the Western Cape, with the Robberg Peninsula in Plettenberg Bay coming in at number 27 and Cecilia Forest in Cape Town featuring at number 29.

The trails were evaluated according to the following criteria:

  1. Length (Distance)
  2. Elevation
  3. Duration
  4. Weather
  5. Instagrammability

The best trail in the world according to the list was the Perito Moreno Glacier Trail in El Calafate, Santa Cruz, Argentina.

The best in Africa too

The travel company also included a list of the best hikes in Africa, where the two Western Cape hikes also took top at number two and three positions. Take a look below:

  1. Berber Villages, Atlas Mountains in Asni, Marrakesh-Tensift-El Haouz, Morocco
  2. Robberg Peninsula in Plettenberg Bay, South Africa
  3. Cecilia Waterfall via Cecilia Forest in Table Mountain National Park, Cape Town, South Africa
  4. Dschelada Pavian Loop from Gich in Simien National Park, Ethiopia
  5. Kilimanjaro, Lemosho Route in Arusha, Tanzania
