The festive season has arrived, and most South Africans have an idea of when they will be taking a break over the holidays.

SOUTH AFRICA GEARS UP FOR FESTIVE SEASON TRAVELS: THREE HIDDEN GEMS TO EXPLORE

While many locals opt for coastal getaways during summer, these spots are often filled with thousands of like-minded tourists.

Travel search site Cheapflights shared three hidden gems in South Africa that provide equally memorable experiences, from wine tasting in the Western Cape’s Boland, to starry nights in the Karoo.

VISIT SOUTH AFRICA’S FOURTH OLDEST TOWN THIS FESTIVE SEASON

The Western Cape is home to world-famous wine routes like Constantia, Durbanville and Stellenbosch. An area that boasts equally picturesque wine farms, and only an hour and a half outside of Cape Town, is Tulbagh.

The little town has a very rich history, being the fourth oldest town in South Africa after Cape Town, Stellenbosch and Swellendam. As a result of its rich soil, Tulbagh is home to many wine farms like Saronsberg and Twee Jonge Gezellen.

In fact, a drive up Waveren Road is worth your while if you’d like to explore the different wines this area has to offer. There are also great accommodation options and charming hotels, some of which have spas. This area is great for a getaway for couples or small families.

SLEEP UNDER THE STARS IN THE NORTHERN CAPE

In South Africa, the Northern Cape is home to a plethora of little-known gems for both local and international tourists. It’s filled with so much cultural history, particularly around the indigenous people of South Africa, and its largely unspoiled landscape lends itself to some amazing opportunities to explore nature.

And arguably the most beautiful of these opportunities is stargazing in Sutherland. Sutherland is a tiny town, home to just over 2000 people, in the south of the province. Stargazing in this region is an exceptional experience, and guided sessions are hosted almost every night throughout the year.

If you would like to quite literally sleep under the stars this festive season, there are camping options available. Other options include a caravan park, and various guest houses.

If you want to view this hidden gem town from a bird’s eye view, there are hot air balloon rides available for the adventurous.

For equally thrilling outdoor activities, you can also enjoy abseiling, white-water rafting, ziplining and hiking.

Not too keen on an adrenaline rush? Take a little walk around the town to do some shopping. Clarens has a delightful store called Bibliophile, a small family-run bookshop on Church Street.
