Heavy rainfall expected in these parts of SA today

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) issued several weather warnings as the expected cut-off low system will develop on Wednesday, 8 February.

Weather warnings issued

The SAWS issued a yellow level 2 weather warning for severe thunderstorms.

This is expected to result in localised flooding and damage to settlements and property.

Areas affected include the Free State, eastern and northern parts of the Northern Cape and the North West, excluding the north-eastern parts.

Additionally, similar stormy conditions are expected to occur over the following areas:

  • Gauteng
  • Southern and eastern Limpopo
  • Highveld, and the escarpment of Mpumalanga
  • Western and southern parts of KwaZulu-Natal,
  • Central parts of the Eastern Cape.

For disruptive rainfall leading to flooding of bridges, roads, and settlements, the SAWS issued an orange level 5 weather warning.

This is for the eastern parts of the Eastern Cape and the south-western parts of KwaZulu-Natal.

How to prepare for a cut-off low

Angelo Ricardo G Hoorn from the severe weather and information centre SA Facebook group shared tips to prepare for a cut-off low with credit to NWS State Emergency Service.

To prepare your home for severe storms, heavy rainfall and minimize damage, follow these 8 steps:

  1. Maintain your yard and secure outdoor items that could blow around.
  2. Clean gutters, down pipes, and drains regularly to prevent blockages.
  3. Trim trees and branches that could fall on your home or property.
  4. Repair any damage to your roof, including broken or missing tiles.
  5. Check your insurance policy is current and adequate.
  6. Create a Home Emergency Plan for your family.
  7. Prepare an emergency/disaster kit with essential items.
  8. Stock a disaster supply kit with food, water, a radio, torch, first aid kit, matches, sanitizer, whistle, etc for 3 days.

Regular maintenance such as yard upkeep, gutter cleaning, and tree trimming will help you stay ahead of the storm.

Make sure your insurance covers storm damage, and have a plan in case of emergency.

Keep an emergency kit with supplies for 3 days in an easily accessible location.
