Cape Town beaches temporarily close

The section of Gordon’s Bay Beach between the walkway and the area in front of Spur which was temporarily closed because of a sewage issue, has now been reopened.

As previously reported by Cape Town Etc, the sewer overflow in Gordon’s Bay was due to a tripped sewer pump, caused by inappropriate materials being thrown into the local sewer network.

But now, just as Gordon’s Bay has been reopened, Llandudno beach has been closed to the public.

This closure is due to an overflow from a sewer pump station after an ultrasonic level sensor became faulty due to a power surge caused by load-shedding. The sensor has since been replaced, reports the City of Cape Town, who is carefully monitoring the situation.

City Health will be taking water samples on a daily basis for water quality testing until such time as the levels are within the minimum requirement for recreational activities as determined by the National Water Quality Guidelines.

Kalk Bay and Dalebrook tidal pools were also closed

The tidal pools in Kalk Bay and Dalebrook which were also shut down, were only just reopened yesterday, 9 January. The beach section between the tidal pools, from Dalebrook to Kalk Bay, will unfortunately remain closed until further notice.

“The water samples for the tidal pools have met the National Water Quality Guidelines and as such were re-opened on Monday, 9 January. Signage near the pools have been removed. While results show an improvement, the section of the beach between the two pools remains closed as a precaution until further notice.” says the City.
