WEATHER: Western Cape to experience strong thunderstorms and heavy rains

Severe Weather Alerts

IMPACT-BASED WARNINGS:

A. Yellow Level 2 Warning for Severe Thunderstorms resulting in localised flooding are expected over the City of Cape Town, southern Central Karoo districts, Witzenberg, Drakenstein and Stellenbosch municipalities.

B. Orange Level 6 Warning for Severe Thunderstorms resulting in heavy downpours and flash flooding as well as damaging winds leading to damage to infrastructure are expected in the Overberg and Garden Route districts municipalities of the Western Cape.

C. Yellow Level 4 Warning for Severe Thunderstorms resulting in heavy downpours and large amounts of small hail are expected over the southern Cape Winelands District, Laingsburg and Prince Albert local municipalities in the Western Cape, as well as the Sarah Baartman, Chris Hani, Amathole, OR Tambo, western parts of Joe Gqabi district municipalities, Nelson Mandela Metro and Buffalo City Metro municipalities in the Eastern Cape, as well as the south-eastern parts of the Northern Cape.

D. Yellow Level 5 Warning for Severe Thunderstorms resulting in heavy downpours and flash flooding leading to damage to property and danger to life are expected over Kouga and Koukamma local municipalities in the Eastern Cape.

Gauteng:

Temperature: Partly cloudy and warm with isolated showers and thundershowers.

The expected UVB Sunburn Index: Extreme.

Mpumalanga:

Temperature: Morning fog patches along the escarpment, otherwise partly cloudy and warm with isolated showers and thundershowers.

Limpopo:

Temperature: Morning fog patches along the escarpment, otherwise partly cloudy and warm to hot with isolated showers and thundershowers, except in the Lowveld.

North-West Province:

Temperature: Partly cloudy and warm to hot, with scattered showers and thundershowers.

Free State:

Temperature: Partly cloudy and warm, with scattered showers and thundershowers.

Northern Cape:

Temperature: Cloudy and cold in the south, otherwise partly cloudy and warm with isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers, except in the north where it will be hot.

Wind: The wind along the coast will be light to moderate southerly to south westerly.

Western Cape:

Temperature: Cloudy and cool to warm with isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers, but widespread in the south.

Wind: The wind along the coast will be light to moderate westerly to north-westerly becoming fresh to strong south-easterly along the south-west coast from late afternoon, spreading along the south coast in the evening.

The expected UVB Sunburn Index: High.

Eastern Cape:

The Western half – Cloudy and warm with widespread showers and thundershowers.

The Western half -Wind: The wind along the coast will be light south westerly at first, otherwise moderate to fresh south easterly.

The Eastern half – Partly cloudy and warm, becoming cloudy with scattered showers and thundershowers from late morning.

The Eastern halfWind: The wind along the coast will be Moderate to fresh north easterly, but strong at times.

Kwazulu-Natal:

Temperature: Morning fog patches over the interior, otherwise partly cloudy and warm with scattered showers and thundershowers in the west, otherwise isolated except in the north-east.

Wind: The wind along the coast will be moderate easterly to north-easterly, becoming fresh south of Cape St. Lucia in the afternoon.

The expected UVB Sunburn Index: Very High.
