Maldives Floating City

One of the most beloved locations in the world, the Maldives, will soon be building a large, eco-friendly floating city. Located just 10 minutes by boat from the capital city of Malé, the project, simply called the Maldives Floating City, is estimated to be completed by 2027.

The floating city will feature a number of facilities such as 5 000 governmental-supported houses, schools and stores. These will all be tethered to the lagoon floor and linked together to create a safe and comfortable environment.

According to the official website, the floating city will have a nature-based structure of roads and water canals resembling the beautiful and efficient way in which real brain coral is organised.

The website also goes on the explain the goal behind the brain coral structure.

“The idea of having brain coral as the leading concept is that the goal of living with nature and learning to improve and respect natural coral is at the heart of the development, which leads to new knowledge emphasising the responsibility Maldives takes as centre for coral protection in the world.”

The new city will be dynamic and flexible, with a smart grid that can respond to changes in weather and climate. The concept uses innovative, sustainable development technologies and applies ecological best practices to protect, preserve and enhance the marine eco-system in the Maldives.

When will the city be ready?

The first block of floating homes is already under construction and is due to be transported to the Lagoon and opened in August. The public will then be able to visit and see first hand what the homes look like. The city construction is said to be scheduled for January 2023 and will take up to 4 or 5 years to complete.
