The South Coast

The magnificent South coast of KwaZulu-Natal is 170km of pure magical coastline that incorporates over 50 beaches, many of which have Blue Flag status. The area stretches from Scottburgh in the north, all the way to Port Edward in the south and Harding in the west, inland. 

With KwaZulu-Natal being a coastal  province, beaches, of course, are part and parcel and there are many reasons why the Southern Coast is such a popular holiday destination – but it mostly boils down to the winning combination of sunshine, warm sea, blue skies and the softest of sands. 

The quaint towns along this region only add to its charm. Usually quiet during the low seasons, (March to November) the towns transform into bustling tourist meccas during the summer months. If you love the buzz, head down to Port Edward or Scottburgh to take in the summer sights and sounds. The winter months also tend to draw a crowd once in a while, especially during the annual sardine run – when huge schools of sardines move through the waters along this coast. 

The region also offers land-based delights in the form of rolling hills, subtropical forests, parks, farms and deep gorges. Hike or picnic in nature reserves in Scottburgh, or experience some wildlife at Lake Eland Game Reserve. One thing is for sure – you’ll never be bored during your holiday on South Africa’s Southern Coast. 

The region is just a 45-minute drive from central Durban, or if you’re flying into the city, it’s an hour’s drive from King Shaka International Airport – both via the N2.
