Pretoria is often overshadowed by its “place of gold” neighbour, Johannesburg. Although, Pretoria or Jacaranda City, as it’s also known, glitters in its own way.

One of South Africa’s three capital cities, Pretoria has been the setting for some of South Africa’s most defining historical moments. Historical and cultural attractions appeal to the history buff and culturally-minded traveller.

Like Johannesburg, a trip to Jacaranda City is easily combined with any number of bush and wildlife breaks, a two-hour drive from the Pilanesberg National Park and four hours from the Kruger National Park.

The climate is highveld at its best. Think sizzling hot summer days with dry, sunny winters and chilly winter nights. Epic thunderstorms are frequent in the summer.

Access the city via O.R. Tambo International Airport, 56km away. Visitors can hire a car or ride the super-clean and efficient Gautrain.

What to do in Pretoria

Pretoria is ideally situated for exploring Gauteng’s natural delights. The city itself is famous for its springtime splash of bright purple flowers from the area’s Jacaranda trees. Outside of the city, mountains, nature reserves and game parks beckon.
