The Wild Coast has something for everyone, but if you’re looking for a ‘wild’ adventure, it really doesn’t any get wilder than along this beautiful coast.
Hole in the Wall in Coffee Bay
Why you should visit: No trip to the Wild Coast is complete without a visit to the famed Hole in the Wall in Coffee Bay. The iconic structure, which literally is a hole in a wall, is a natural arch formed on a tidal island. With waves crashing in and around the hole, it is a mighty sight to behold and is a must experience during a trip to the Wild Coast.
How to get there: The hole is about 7.5 hours from Durban and 4.5 hours from East London. Find your way to the hole either by foot (guided hikes) or 4×4 vehicles.
Wild Coast Sun Resort and Casino
Why you should visit: For a spot of gambling, fantastic accommodation, a round of golf, or a relaxing spa treatment after you’re done bundu-bashing, the Wild Coast Sun is the place to be. If you still find yourself seeking some adrenaline-filled activity, the Wild Waves Waterpark is a must for kids and adults alike.
How to get there: Find the Wild Coast Sun on Main Bizana Road, Bizana.
Magwa Falls in Lusikisiki
Why you should visit: If you’re one who’s mad about waterfalls, then the Wild Coast region is the ultimate destination for you. The area is teeming with countless falls like Fraser, Banyane and Bulolo waterfalls, to name a few. Arguably the most majestic out of the lot though, might just be the towering Magwa Falls. Said to be the smaller version of Zambia’s Victoria Falls, Magwa drops down 144m into a narrow canyon and is easily accessible for the adventurous traveller.
How to get there: Located on a tea plantation, Magwa is just 8km outside of Lusikisiki.
Hluleka Nature Reserve in Port St. Johns
Why you should visit: The Wild Coast is also home to some of the most beautiful and diverse nature reserves in the country. One such is the Hluleka nature reserve in Port St. Johns. Considered one of the Wild Coast’s best kept secrets, the reserve plays host to a wide variety of ecosystems and wildlife including; Eland, Bushbuck and Zebras. Go hiking, explore the beaches, or simply just take in the beauty of your surroundings from one of the chalets on the reserve.
How to get there: Find the nature reserve 30km south of Port St. Johns.
Nelson Mandela Museum in Mthatha
Why you should visit: Established in February 2000, the Nelson Mandela Museum celebrates the life and journey of one of history’s most indelible heroes; Nelson Mandela. The museum offers exhibitions that showcase the impact he had on the lives of people and the world. A must visit for all South African and international visitors alike.
How to get there: The museum is situated in the Bhunga Building on Nelson Mandela Drive in Mthatha.
