South Africa’s rugged eastern coast, aptly named The Wild Coast is a 250km stretch of untouched coastline from East London right up to the border of KwaZulu-Natal. For it’s promises of unspoiled coastlands, lagoons and all round natural beauty, the Wild Coast does not disappoint.
Although a coastal region, as the name suggests, the Wild Coast also offers up dense and ancient forests, teeming with bird and animal life. Hiking and 4×4 trails abound in this region, as the terrain remains mostly uninhabited and undeveloped.
Another unique way to take in the sights is by horseback, with some companies even offering full-day and multi-day trips.
With a mild, sub-tropical climate and the gorgeously warm Indian ocean at its feet, the Wild Coast is indeed the perfect all year round getaway destination. Besides its obvious natural splendor, the area also affords numerous adventure opportunities like cliff-diving, surfing, deep-sea fishing, canoeing and abseiling.
And culture-buffs are not to be left out, the Wild Coast proffers heritage and history-filled delights in the form of museums and township tours to traditional Xhosa villages.
What to do on The Wild Coast
The Wild Coast has something for everyone, but if you’re looking for a ‘wild’ adventure, it really doesn’t any get wilder than along this beautiful coast.
