Known as South Africa’s friendly city, Port Elizabeth (often shortened to PE) is the largest city in the Eastern Cape. As of 2021, the city was renamed to Gqeberha as a way of restoring lost heritage. The city stretches for 16km along the scenic Algoa Bay and is a major port dating back to the 1820s.

With a multicultural history, an idyllic setting on the shores of the warm Indian Ocean and a wealth of wildlife to be found inland, Port Elizabeth is well worth a visit!

For travellers wanting to slow down and connect with nature, Port Elizabeth is just the place, as it’s very much a city with a small-town heart.

Weather conditions are mild and fairly consistent. Summers are less humid than some neighbouring provinces to the north and winters are cool but mild.

Most domestic airlines fly to Port Elizabeth International Airport and hiring a car is recommended and, with little traffic, the city is a pleasure to navigate.

With the fresh sea air blowing in from the warm Indian Ocean and wildlife and nature reserves just a short drive from the city centre, Port Elizabeth has many more natural delights.
